Re: Retreat into Spring

Hello! So much to catch you up on. From the beginning of the year until now, I have been sharing the creative blossoms, clearing away what does not serve me, planting new seeds and tending to the garden known as life. Why I am talking in terms of NATURE? Well, I recently went on a mountain retreat…into nature and into my Self. And I found they were one in the same! A “Retreat” can mean many things. Most know it as going to a retreat center, unplugging from technology, meditation, yoga etc. And it can be all those things. What I found to be the most important aspect was actually “Retreating” into ME. This entailed me going inside and creating alot of space around who I am, what I aspire to be, what i think, what i think I know etc etc etc. Why do I need to do this you ask? Or maybe you have been there before and know. As Tara Brach says, we can all get in a trance of our beliefs, our desires, our fears and our doubts and in this RETREAT, I feel I woke up to who I really am. Now as spring is springing and we feel the tug of life pulling us from our winter hibernation into action, i feel more in my truth and less pulled by what is not true for me. Does that make sense? What I know to be true for me, what truly inspires my heart and soul is MUSIC, FILM, THEATER, SOCIAL JUSTICE and LOVE. So now as I think about my next steps as both an artist and activist..I find myself asking the question, where am I needed? Thanks for reading..more to come. xoxoi

Happy New Year! I want to start off by thanking those who read my blog! Happy thanksgiving everyone. I hope you had a wonderful time with your family and friends. If you have a chance to see the Documentary Film ‘MissRepresentation”, it is one of the most important films I have seen right now. It is about how women and girls are depicted badly in entertainment and media and how we are not seeing the SMART, POWERFUL AND COURAGEOUS WOMAN depicted. On another note, it is CRAZY to think about.. that 4 years ago i narrated a book called BREAKING DAWN. I loved playing vampires from around the world. “Breaking Dawn received mixed reviews from critics and is the most controversial book in the series, as it explored more mature themes and concepts. However, the novel was awarded the British Book Award for “Children’s Book of the Year”. I get alot of letters from fans around the globe, thanking me for telling them stories. I realized just how far and wide my voice and these stories have traveled! And I really do appreciate you reaching out to me to let me know!As you all know, “Breaking Dawn” the 4th book in the Twilight Series, will be coming out soon as a film. And also many of you know that I am a music producer as well. Well, we (Lythion Music and singer named Dalal from Austria) wrote a song, inspired by my narrations of these stories! We will keep you posted of course! I also just got back from a film festival, where a documentary film that we produced and scored, “Separate, But Equal”, won the 2011 HBO Best Documentary Film Award! Hello! Is it really June 9th and over 90 degrees?! I have been super busy since my last post but I wanted to say hi and let you know what I have been up to. You have heard me mention the documentary film.”Separate, But Equal; which my company Lythion Music produced and scored the music for. Great news! Our film will preview at The Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival and has placed into the HBO Documentary Competition. A version of our film will also become a part of The Smithsonian’s new museum in Washington D.C. Re: Girl Power…the art of producing.

Hello there and Happy Spring! Sorry to have been neglectful to the blog, but work and travels has kept me away. Now that spring has sprung and everything has turned a bit more green and sprouting…i feel the urge to create and share here. Love to chat a bit about producing. Producing is one of those words that has morphed over the years and it’s definition has enriched for me. When I was beginning my path and process as an artist, i looked always to others to find me a place to fit in. I would create art within other people’s structures and could get very lost inside their world. Don’t get me wrong, there is something very freeing and fulfilling about being a performer inside another’s idea…but it is not the only way! When i was studying at Experimental Theater Wing at NYU, i started a new path of generating my own material, my own world to explore and how to keep my own eye on the big picture at the same time. This path of being both performer and producer is not easy and that is why I think so many performers don’t ever choose it.

“Producing” : To bring forth; yield. To bring forth by mental and physical effort. To give rise to; bring about. I started to feel at a certain point, that when i stepped into both roles of performer and producer, yes i took on more of a challenge, BUT it ignited my fire and passion to be courageous, use my own voice, create my own ideas and create vehicles that would show off my gifts best. I produce music, stories, films, events and ideas that inspire me and hopefully others. The “Art of Producing” is the idea that you look at producing in the same creative way you do performing. Producing takes communication, craft and intuition…the same tools you need for performing. Those that do not get this, end up with projects that do not work, because they have seen “Producing” only as an ego boost to be “in charge”. Wearing both hats has become a part of my process and I love what it has yielded and brought forth for Lythion Music and all our collaborations. What do you produce? And what will it bring to the world? Those questions are a great place to start your creative path today.

When man interferes with the Tao, the sky becomes filthy, the earth becomes depleted, the equilibrium crumbles, creatures become extinct.

The master views the parts with compassion, because he understands the whole. His constant practice is humility. He doesn’t glitter like a jewel but lets himself be shaped by the Tao, as rugged and common as a stone.

Return is the movement of the Tao. Yielding is the way of the Tao. All things are born of being. Being is born of non-being.
